Is there a World wide or International Copyright Registry? |
 |
|
|
Is there such thing as an "international copyright"?
Well... Yes and NO. Until there is one single governing body in "charge of the world", there is little hope that one single government run copyright registry will be created to automatically protect an author’s works in every nation.
This is precisely the reason that WorldWideOCR.com exists. Protection against unauthorized use in a particular nation depends on the national copyright laws of that country and their interpretation of the two main international copyright conventions.
Most countries offer copyright protection to foreign works under certain conditions, which have been established through international copyright agreements and conventions. There are two primary international copyright conventions, the Berne Union for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Property (Berne Convention) and the Universal Copyright Convention (UCC).
Should you seek copyright protection for your work in a particular country, you should first determine the extent of protection available to works of foreign authors in that country. It is also best that this should be investigated before the work is published anywhere. The extent of protection may depend on the facts existing at the time of first publication.
Every nation provides different protection and interpretations of these international copyright conventions. Some countries offer little or no copyright protection to any foreign works. It is advisable to consult with an expert (familiar with the copyright laws of the region you are interested in) to obtain current information on the requirements and protection provided by foreign countries.
What is a copyright? "Copyright" literally means the right to copy. Copyright is an internationally accepted form of intellectual property law. Your creation has copyrights the instant that you commit it to some sort of tangible media. In simple terms, providing your work is indeed original, you already own the copyrights... The trick being able to prove this fact.
Why do I need to protect my work with any Copyright Registry? Problems can arise if you are required to provide credible evidence of when you first created your copyrights... In theory, any original work has certain rights the instant it is committed to a reproducible format. But in this Internet age, we highly recommend that register your before you publish your work anywhere. The sooner, the better.
At WorldWideOCR you can register any copyright the minute it is completed, ensuring that your original work will be documented and registered before publication. Read more
